Between 50-75% of pregnant women experience low back pain due to changes in weight, posture, and hormones. Gaining a healthy average of 9-18 kilograms shifts your centre of gravity, straining your spine, muscles, ligaments, and joints. This can lead to back and buttock pain that worsens with activity or prolonged sitting or standing. Discomfort may increase throughout the day and even disrupt sleep.
Chiropractic care can help by gently adjusting the spine and pelvis, which can improve nerve function, reduce muscle tension, and alleviate pain.
In addition to chiropractic care, helpful strategies include frequent breaks from sitting or standing, side-sleeping with a pillow between the knees, and wearing supportive shoes. Both sedentary lifestyles and extremely physically demanding ones can worsen symptoms. Guidelines suggest that healthy pregnant women aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per week. Always consult with your chiropractor before initiating or increasing any exercise routine.
